PRACTICUM REVIEW

ENES140 - Discovering New Ventures

ENES140 is a course focused on the startup of a new business. Students learn about identifying entrepreneurial opportunities and what resources and actions are needed to get started. Dr. Green discusses the strategies, leadership styles, and business designs needed to be successful as a new startup. Models are used to assess the an industry’s current standing and the feasibility of a new business entering.

What I learned

I took this course for my practicum to step outside my comfort zone. I have never been business-savvy, so the idea of a class focused on starting a business from  the ground-up is intimidating. I learned that there are so many factors in play that can affect a new business’s success: an industry’s status, condition, competition, and value innovation.

How I have grown as a student, leader, and professional

The Opportunity Analysis Canvas project is the term project that I’ve been working on since the beginning of the semester. In one of our earlier assignments, we had to choose an industry to plan a startup in. I had to use all the resources given to me by Dr. Green to find a feasible market for my imaginary startup. As a student, this taught me to use everything in my grasp to better myself. As a leader, I want to be on the reciprocal end where I give my future employees all the resources they need to succeed. As a professional, I now understand how to look between the smaller and larger pictures to be successful.

Moving Forward

No matter what field I go into, there will be business involved. Having the knowledge from this class will help me to see how I can facilitate the growth and development of any company I join or any company that I start.

Future Plans for College and Beyond

For the remainder of my time at the University of Maryland, I hope to be successful. I will finish my General Biology courses and my newly acquired Science, Technology, Ethics, and Policy (STEP) minor. For the STEP minor, I have concentrated my courses on ethics related to the medical/scientific field. I also hope to get a position in the laboratory of a biology or chemistry professor.

Beyond college, I hope to find a position at a medical research company. I believe there are so many discoveries to still be made, and I can help discover them.
